Poll shows mixed feelings about swine flu

by Pulse.Of.Petaluma

pulse090924Nearly two-thirds of respondents to an Argus-Courier survey Sept. 17, 2009 favor putting a casino advisory measure on the June 2010 ballot.
Asked if they favor or oppose a proposed casino in Rohnert Park, 86.8 percent said they oppose it.
Here are some of the comments by those who  participated in the survey:
——
“I oppose both the casino and the advisory measure. Please quit pulling my chain with the illusion that an advisory measure would do or mean anything at all, except possibly eliminate a county job due to the expense of putting a measure forth.”
——
“Casinos are a scourge of the community and a hidden tax on the poor. Wake up!”
——
“A 762,000-square-foot casino/resort (the size of the Santa Rosa downtown mall) would change the character of our county forever. We need an advisory vote on such an important issue.”
——
“This casino represents the worst in politics. A huge, cash-rich company waves some money in the air and the Rohnert Park City Council just pounces. It’s shameful.”
——
“I really could not care if they build a casino in Rohnert Park. It is their decision and not ours to get involved in — even more so if it’s going to cost $100,000 just to say, ‘we don’t want it.’”
——
“If I wanted to live by a casino, I would move to Nevada.”
——
“I won’t be a customer. If the casino pays its fair share of community infrastructure costs, I don’t have a problem with it operating as a private business. I hope that addiction to tax revenue doesn’t fast-track normal planning and regulatory requirement.”
——
“The community needs the casino for jobs, tax income, and tourism. I strongly support the casino.”
——
“The intent of the Indian gaming initiative was to allow (casinos) on reservations, not shop for land.”
——
“Greg Sarris’ FIGR is not a historic Indian ‘tribe.’ It never had a ‘reservation’ at the Graton Rancheria; and it doesn’t deserve to have the rights of a sovereign Indian nation.”
——
“No more gambling in our state! It’s a total rip-off of everyone involved — taxpayer, gambler, Indian native.”
——
“Please allow the people to speak!”
——
“Like your mother used to say, ‘Two wrongs do not make a right!’  Allowing Station Casinos to use the Federated Indians of the Graton Rancheria as their ‘straw man’ to shove a casino into a bedroom community (and thus ruin it) will not make up for 500 years of mistreatment of Native Americans.”
——
“This thing is a giant disaster. I wish it would go away!”
——
“The casino would become the largest, negative footprint there ever has been in Sonoma County. It will effect everyone along the Highway 101 corridor and beyond.”
——
“Building this casino in a flood plain and in an essentially green area is a travesty. If casinos are to be built, they should be in the neighborhoods of the politicians authorizing these monstrosities.”
——
“Move into the real world. There is plenty of room, and we need some more entertainment, keep our money in Sonoma County.”
——
“A mega-casino does not belong in the middle of Sonoma County.”
——
“The citizens most affected are us, the residents. We deserve input and representation.”
——
“Casinos bring money, yes; they also bring incredible crime and corruption, and are the antithesis to quality of life.”
——
“Casino gambling is a proven long-term loser. The country went through a gambling scourge in the late 1800s and it got so bad that lotteries, the main gambling at that time, were banned, and that is why states’ constitutions must be amended to this day. Cost will outweigh benefits 4 to 1! It will destroy our country if left unchecked.”
——
“Anyone who reads ‘Gambling In America’ by Earl Grinols would be opposed to having the proposed casino!”
“The plebiscite should be binding, not advisory.”
——
“We want a vote!”
——
“Let the Indians go back to their reservations.”
——
“Don’t we have enough of these places in the area?”
——
“Sonoma County ahs voted on casino issues numerous times in recent years. Just use that data!”
——
“We need the jobs.”
——
“I love the casino to be built at Rohnert Park. At least the money stays in California rather than go to Vegas.”
——
“The area cannoty spare the 1 million gallons of water a day that they will need.”
——
“Why can’t we vote on this?”
——
“We need to regain control of our own government.”
——
“A casino in a college town is nothing but opportunistic. The part-time jobs are not a good scene for young adults. No matter what they say, this will lead to more drunks on the roads and we already have plenty. I’m happy to have a buck or two of my tax dollars send the strongest possible message to the Governor and the supporters of this ill conceived idea. I grew up near casino country and there is nothing this industry offers that I want any part of. Find a nobler pursuit.”
——
“No casino!!! We don’t need any additional traffic on 101!”
——
“Indian casinos are getting to be as annoying as Starbucks on every corner. Enough!”
——
“Better things to do with Sonoma land & water.”
——
“Thank you Councilmember Mike Healy for showing leadership!”
——
“Reno is close enough!”
——
“Don’t we have enough drunk drivers and traffic locally already? Just look at the police arrests list.”
——
“Tired of time and money wasted on yet another casino or casino measure? Enough is enough the last thing we need is another casino. More traffic more problems and more waste of our precious land. Stop all casino development now!”
——
“Casinos kill local communities and business.”
——
“No more casinos!”
——
“They need to know the citizens do NOT think this is OK!”
——
“Worse trafic, worse crime, low pay jobs, damage to surface and ground water, no local control, most money will go to Nevada mobs and political cronies, the Indians will be screwed (again).”
——
“Yes, let them put one in Rohnert Park. It will create jobs.”
——
“No gambling close to our communities and children.”
——
“Rohnert Park is a rural, family-orientated community which should never establish a gambling casino in it’s community! We are not Las Vegas or Reno with gambling as our main source of income! Should this be allowed we will lose our family & local business township forever! There has to be better ways to increase revenue! Please don’t do this!”
——
“An advisory ballot measure next June would get the attention of the two nominees for governor, which is critical because the next governor will probably get the task of negotiating a gaming compact with the Graton Rancheria.”
——
“It is the most Destructive project facing Sonoma County.    “
——
“A casino would bring the worst element to our community!”

I am a resident and a small business owner in Sonoma County and I want FIGR to build the casino as soon as yesterday. More customers for me, local restaurants, taxi`s, retail stores, etc.etc. And besides that the “mega casino” will create “mega employment oportunity” for our own beloved Sonoma county residents. I am 100% sure that when the casino will start hiring, many of todays opposing residents will be standing in front of the casino with their resumes in hand, claiming that they were praying for the casino.
Yeah Yeah, we all have seen the “polls” where people vote against the casino. Only 138 people oppose. ONLY 138… this is a joke, I am sorry, how many people leave in Sonoma County? Forget it. How many residents are in Rohnert Park ONLY? Forget even this one. How many people leave off of Golf Cource? I believe at least 100 times more than 138.
This tells me that if locals were really against the casino, they would find time to vote “NO”
Mr. Sarris, How can I help you to help me and other small business owners and future employees of yours.

How many more casinos do we need? If you got to gamble, drive north 45 mins. and you have at least 2 indian casinos already…do we really need another right in the heart of Sonoma County? I think not.

It’s a Wonderful Life is being played out in this nation. What do you want the future to be for your children and grandchildren? Gambling, broken families and crime? Come on people – this is a travesty for Sonoma County.
