We asked readers to vote online for what they thought were the top stories of 2009. Here’s how they voted:

1. The City Council’s effort to combine the Planning Commiss-ion and design-review board proves controversial; city is sued by ousted commissioners. (26.1%)

2. Dutra Materials’ proposal to build an asphalt plant at Haystack Landing south of Petaluma. (19.6%) 3. (tie) Economic recession takes toll on businesses, residents; leads to layoffs at City Hall and school cuts (10.87%)

3. (tie) A Sonoma family of four is killed on Lakeville Highway when their car is struck by a 19-year-old driver who one witness claims was drinking before the collision, although toxicology tests show that he wasn’t drinking. (10.87%)

5. (tie) Ellis Creek Water Recycling Facility and new wetlands trails open after two decades of debate over building a new sewer plant. (6.52%)

5. (tie) The annual Veterans Day Parade is saved from cancellation after donors provide funding for police and other city services. (6.52%)
