About 64 percent of those responding to this week’s online poll opposed a change to electronic-only toll taking on the Golden Gate Bridge. About 27 percent supported the change and 9 percent weren’t sure.
Here were some of the comments.

“Because our beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, California and the Bay Area’s most beautiful iconic symbol, deserves better. Human toll takers offer a smile to first time visitors and California residents, directions to the lost, and emergency advice to those in need. We suggest that Golden Gate Bridge directors volunteer their services, instead.”
——
“How about the car that zooms through without any readable license plates. Will they be sent a bill too?”
——
“How are they going to collect tolls from new vehicles when they don’t have a license plate? How about rental cars? There are covers that when installed over the license plate make it impossible to photograph license plates. I’m sure there are more questions that have yet to be answered. I will miss the nice toll takers!”
——
“It’s sad that most of us don’t wish this change but they are going to do it anyway. And we wonder why unemployment is so high.”
——
“Just replace the Board of Directors with some bright junior high students.”
——
“More jobs lost. Charge the bikers and walkers $1.”
——
“Now that they have gotten rid of the toll takers, how about getting rid of most of the people who sit on the bridge board, receiving stipends and other perks. Might have been fine in the ‘30s and ‘40s, but hardly necessary now.”
——
“Penny wise, pound foolish.”
——
“There goes more jobs. When you’re on a motorcycle what do you do, reach into your pocket and hold the FasTraK above your head? What if you have more than one car and more than one motorcycle do you have to keep transferring it car to car and bike to bike? What if you forget? They say they will save all this money but you’ll see it will go into their pockets and not into the bridge or to lower the tolls. Meanwhile more people in the unemployment line. Good move.”
——
“They are forcing us into the FasTrak system. Plus the Golden Gate was supposed to be free when it was paid off; now it supports a transit system.”
——
“Anything that lessens the burden of overpaid union workers!”
——
“This is a stupid idea.”
