Less than one-fourth of those who responded to an online Argus-Courier poll Jan. 1, 2008 feel that Petaluma”s streets are in better condition than they were five years ago.
Some 20.3 percent said that streets are better, while a combined 78 percent said they”re either worse or the same.
Asked if they think the city is doing a good job maintaining and improving streets, more than three-fourths of respondents (79.7 percent) said no, while only 15.3 percent said yes.
Some 83.1 percent said street conditions pose a safety hazard, while 13.6 percent said they do not.
Here are some of the comments by those who responded to the survey:
” “
“Streets are a bit bumpy, but hey, it”s a major recession, what do you expect? I think you should fix the Washington Street overpass first, then you can concentrate on the streets. Can potholes be patched by private citizens? If so, teach us how and we will do it.”
” “
“Never, ever seems to get fixed. Wonder why, and where the money”s going.”
” “
“Once Washington Street finally gets fixed from Howard Street to Petaluma Boulevard, I”ll be happier.”
” “
“The only thing more dangerous than the streets are the sidewalks.”
” “
“They stopped before they completed the overhaul.”
” “
“Oops! We forgot to charge new development for the impacts they have on our existing streets and roads. Now we have to pay for the results of this traffic growth. How about forming a city-wide streets and parks benefit district, so we can finally vote to fund repairs and upgrades to our parks and streets, and stop depending on a Ponzi scheme of new development to pay for the past problems. Oops …”
” “
“I think the streets need to be a higher priority. In some areas, graded gravel would be a better driving surface than our “paved” roads.”
” “
“I would rather have old streets than a bunch of working crews and smelly asphalt being poured and traffic getting jammed up. Who cares? Spend money on something more important than an old street … that is what makes us unique. Make people drive slower, too.”
” “
“Why all the whining about the streets? Just a few years back, the citizens voted no on a utility tax that would have lasted only 20 years and every street in our town would have been outstanding. You get what you vote for!”
” “
“Some streets are better, but many of the repairs were weak patches which have deconstructed in droves. Hazards everywhere, especially for smaller cars, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles.”
” “
“Don”tcha miss “Animal”? Remember, he was the fool who started the whole “Petaluma: Pothole Capital of the World” campaign? Strange how he”s been silent since his Republican cronies did nothing to fix our streets since they were in power. Mark these words: now that the far right has been voted out, “Animal” will re-appear to work his mischief!”
” “
“I am very concerned for people walking and riding bicycles. The roads are not safe for us to ride, causing more people to drive. More drivers wear down casino online the roads faster.”
” “
“Street maintenance took a back seat for many years in Petaluma, so catching up will take many years. Unfortun-ately, the city”s weak per-capita tax base will continue to make solving this problem difficult and time-consuming.”
” “
“We need more lighted crosswalks, more street lighting in general … and the potholes!”
” “
“Maria Drive near Northstar Drive and Big Bend is like a giant asphalt jigsaw puzzle. Huge chunks of road are loose and ragged. This is a main thoroughfare and needs to be repaved.”
” “
“We need the pot holes fixed … not a new fancy street in front of the Theatre District.”
” “
“The improvements that were made are appreciated, but why did they stop? There are many other main streets out there that still need major attention ” Sixth Street, for example!”
” “
“The county should repair the streets surrounding Petaluma.”
” “
“It is dangerous to ride a bike on the roads here, especially if you use sharp rocks to pave the streets with. Makes no sense.”
” “
“The absolute worst street in town is Sixth Street between D and I streets. I will drive out of my way to avoid this spine-jarring mess.”
” “
“Potholes on a motorcycle could be deadly, but they are never filled until someone gets hurt. The two-into-one lane “road diet” is very stupid, congests traffic and people will continue to have fender benders as others continue to race to the front before it turns into one lane. Having one straight lane only on the Boulevard and the other turned into a turn lane only is a disaster. People realize they are in a turn lane only too late and just cut in front of you at the last minute. I know these are not pavement condition issues, but they are very bad street conditions and they were caused by the city with our money, and it will be our money wasted once again by them to change it back when they finally realize they screwed up once again at our expense. Go figure.”
” “
“You are kidding, right? The streets of Petaluma are horrid!”
” “
“Disgraceful!”
” “
“Better bike lanes would be nice. But for a car, the streets are fine.”
” “
“What about the cars?”
” “
“Where”s the money going?”
” “
“Streets on the west side of town pose a safety hazard.”
” “
“Petaluma has the worst roads in the Bay Area!”
” “
“Prioritize downtown and the close-in westside areas.”
