The majority of those responding to this week’s Argus-Courier online poll did not think the local community is doing enough to protect its senior citizens from various forms of elder fraud and theft.

About 62.5 percent of those responding to the poll did not think enough was being done, while 25 percent did. About 12.5 percent weren’t sure.

“Friends and families should take an active role if their elders are susceptible to scams and fraud.”

“I believe that we should lookout for each other. To befriend another would be a good start. Also the banks have to be made aware of the possibilty of fraud situations with the elderly. Especially when a stranger arrives at the bank or other finanical institutions with a senior citizen in tow and has the senior ask the teller to withdraw monies from their account. The teller should at that time bring the manger into the situation. This will help a great deal to protect the senior citizen from being taken by a scammer, even if it is a relative.”

“Enough with the Nanny State, already! Old people should be taken care of by their family.”

——

“I’ve lived here for a long time and by far, next to the drug epidemic, its the biggest problem out there, but the two tie in to each other.”
