The majority of those responding to the Argus-Courier’s weekly online poll said that they planned to vote against a statewide proposition that would repeal the death penalty in California and replace it with life in prison without the possibility of parole.
About 60 percent said they would not vote in favor of the proposition, while about 38 percent said they would. About 2 percent weren’t sure.
Here are some of the comments.

“Animals like Davis (Polly Klass killer) doesn’t deserve to breathe the same air as you and I do. Vengeance? Nay! Just desserts? Aye!”
——
“California needs to get beyond this legal form of murder.”
——
“Consequences. I’m not willing to subsidize room and board, three square meals, free health care or anything else for convicted killers. Neither should you.”
——
“I’d even vote for a tax increase if they’d actually get rid of these murderers. Unfortunatly, our state will never use the death penalty again. Too many bleeding hearts. So much for justice for their victims.”
——
“I’m not opposed to the death penalty, but I’m against the excessive costs and delays. Fair and due process should be swift. If it is more cost-effective to implement a life sentence, then that’s the better option.”

“I agree with the death penalty. I don’t understand wasting money to put this on a ballot and voting for it. We have a death penality but it’s never used. All these death rows are really full of lifers.”
——
“I support the death penalty, but in California the system is broken. I would rather the inmates get life in prison to simplify the process and to reduce the expense of all the appeals.”
——
“The death penalty wastes money. As long as the convicts get life with no parole, I am all for it. No protective custody either. Put them in general population and the likes of Richard Allen Davis and Scott Peterson will meet their just reward in a day.”
——
“We should be ending the lives of people like Polly Klaas’ killer, not prolonging them.”
