a bill awaiting Gov. Brown’s signature that would make state financial aid available to undocumented immigrants and out-of-state students attending state colleges.
About 87 percent said it is not a good investment in California future and it is not fair.
Here are some of the comments by those who responded to the survey:
——
“Honestly, I understand the concept, yet find it a slap in the face to the millions of legal students currently attempting to finish their education who don’t qualify for any aid. What the U.S. government does for one, it should do for all. If providing a college education to all citizens is part of our democracy, it should not exempt legal citizens of the same funding.”
——
“Our country, and particularly our state, were built by immigrants. Now we call them ‘undocumented,’ but in fact, they do a whole lot of work no one else wants to do that needs to be done. We need our friends to the south so we need to treat them well — and fairly.”
——
“I’ll back the California Dream Act soon as the state Legislature gives up their salaries and perks to make up the $40 million.”
——
“If a private foundation wants to provide financial aid to undocumented immigrants and out-of-state students, fine, but people who are here illegally or are from other states should not receive educational subsidies from California’s public funds.”
——
“I feel that state funding should be granted to legal tax-paying immigrants or anyone else who wants to apply.”
——
“How many U.S. citizens try to get grants for college each year who can’t? Look at our unemployment statistics. Things are not improving financially for our own people. It seems we are slowly being forced into a lower, less optimistic way of living.  Enough already!”
——
“Another bad idea in the declining state of California.”
——
“Are you kidding? This ‘Dream Act’ is a nightmare for any kids living in Reno, Portland, Phoenix or any other nearby state, since illegals going to a UC or Cal State university will pay a lot less in tuition than these out of state American students. You heard that right, it’s an insane policy that is detrimental to taxpaying U.S. citizens. California is currently on a suicidal crash course. With our screwed-up priorities regarding school funding, immigration, and all the rest, it’s amazing to me a kid from another state would even consider going to school in California.”
——
“Great, give money to people who live here illegally, but don’t give money to those who need it who are living here legally. That makes perfect sense. Nice job, Governor Brown.”
——
“We need to get our own children in this state, an education. That $40 million should go into existing schools, and infrastructure. It’s sounds all nice and peachy wanting to let everyone get an education, but our own children are suffering. If their parents get them documented, that is fine. But we are paying for everyone else and ignoring ourselves. That is wrong.”
——
“Why not invest in our country’s students? Many of them can’t get into colleges because of the smaller class sizes and the increase in out of state students.”
We are going broke in medical care already for illegal immigrants.”
——
“Be a legal resident or get out! I am tired of having to pay taxes to go to all these social services that go toward illegal aliens.””
——
“Enough already. The illegal immigrants have abused our systems for way to long, the state cannot afford to support them in any way. We can barely keep our state afloat as it is.”
——
“It’s simply being abused, too many ‘illegal’ immigrants taking from our legal citizens!”
——
“Let’s take of our legal California residents first, then worry about the out-of-staters. Illegal aliens should be the last considered for admission to our schools. $40 million? That will skyrocket out of control. We need to take care of our residents first before assuming the burdens of the world. Our taxpayers need to have their tax dollars spent responsibly, not on ‘feel-good’ programs that I doubt will pay off dividends.”
——
“Now that those two illegal aliens have been identified by name and photograph, shouldn’t Immigration get to work? They are already slipping through with a virtually free education at SRJC, but they still want more. Only in a sick society would we allow derelict parents to dictate immigration laws. The parents screw up, and the state of California will come in and mop up the mess. These illegal students need to go back to their native country, and if they really want back in the USA they’ll go through the long process. Otherwise they obviously don’t think it’s worth the trouble, they’re just looking for another free handout. Changing laws to legalize the illegal is societal suicide. No other country is so stupid as to allow such destructive policies.”
——
“Stop putting taxpayer money toward illegal immigrants. If you have not been paying attention the state is broke. And stop using the term ‘undocumented.’ When a person breaks the law, it is not called undocumented.”
——
“There’s not enough space in this newspaper to print how I feel about this. People in Sacramento (or Washington) could care less how we feel about this issue.”
——
“This a lot like allowing undocumented immigrants to drive without a license or insurance. The public is against it but the politicians allow it in order to gain votes from the Hispanic community. There’s nothing a person like myself can do about these changes.”
——
“Undocumented equals illegal. We welcome immigrants, but we welcome them as long as they abide by our nation’s laws! I have to follow our laws. So should everyone else!”
——
“Why doesn’t our government worry about its citizens prior to helping others? Ridiculous!”
——
“Why don’t we focus on taking care of the people who are here legally first? We can’t even afford to take care of them.”
——
“You have to be kidding. Illegal immigrants are already costing the taxpayers, now you want to give them financial aid for an education? You know that none of the aid will be repaid. They will just stick their middle finger up and say, ‘Sue us.’ The politicians are the ones who need an education. Again, they are showing us their true colors. They want to destroy our state along with Obama destroying our country. Can not wait for the election to oust these morons.”
